The Hidden Cost of our Food

Photo: Salina Journal
This is the kind of accident we hate to see in our farming communities. Two young men lost their lives yesterday afternoon when these tubes of a grain elevator collapsed. They were buried under over 2 million pounds of wheat.

This doesn't happen often, but it is another indication of the dangers of farming. It seems like every year there are people killed with grain, tractors, trucks, combines, etc. The price for our food is 'priceless'!

How horrible and terribly sad! Those poor families!

You are so right, no one knows how dangerous it is to work in the mills. They have to deal with extreme heat of over 140 degrees to below 0 temps.

My husband works at a rice mill, and these men pay dearly with their health and so forth to get the rice out.

God bless our workers, all of them.

what a horrible tragedy. You are so right, it is the thing we never think of and is paid at a high price. So sad.

Oh that is awful.
Every year I hear about a tractor accident around here. Very sad.

Paul was remembering back in 1983 when one of the grain elevators had collapsed- was it in Mingo or Oakley?
This is a sad post... but sooo true.

Thanks for all the comments. It is a sad time for the families. Both men were very young, and just starting to figure out what they wanted in life.

Kathy, Uncle V said the accident in 1983 was in Oakley. No one was hurt.
